Defining Functional Nutrition

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine means identifying and addressing the root causes of one's health problems. The majority of our health concerns have changed over the past decades that are related to our lifestyle habits, food, stress, agricultural patterns and the environment. This has led to significant nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, emotional disorders, an over worked detoxification system and disease.

What is Nutritional Medicine?

Nutritional Medicine is using food and nutrition including nutritional supplements as medicine. Much of our health concern is due to and treated best with correcting nutritional deficiencies and imbalances. This is the advantage of Dr. Horinouchi's Wellness Clinic where his strengths are in having been trained in nutrition, exercise physiology, stress and emotional health, psychology and substance abuse.

What is Personalized Medicine?

Patient centered or personalized medicine is where the clinic allows the patient to fully explain their concerns, goals and history of their health problems. Patient visits may be 1 hour or sometimes longer so that we can together identify and address the whole person looking at lifestyle, environment and genetic factors contributing to the health symptoms and concerns.

Are tests available to determine the root cause of health issues?

Functional Medicine tests are available to identify nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, hormone imbalances, digestive dysfunctions, toxic exposures, food allergies and intolerances, metabolic disorders, heavy metal intoxication and genetic mutations (epigenetics) affecting our health.

Does it work?

Functional and Nutritional Medicine has evidence for reducing inflammation, toxicity, managing oxidative stress, correcting hormonal imbalances, improving immune function, altering genetic expression and reducing coagulation of blood. In effect, nutritional medicine may assist in the correction of many underlying biochemical problems that contribute to chronic degenerative disease states. Time and continuous support is vital for achieving and maintaining desired health.
